Subject 2 starts now: Working with Clients — Originate & Develop Concepts (BSBCRT512). Today is the unpack — what the unit covers, what good concept work actually looks like, and a walk-through of tomorrow's in-class activity. No deliverables today. Just the lay of the land so tomorrow's flying.
Three blocks. The unit unpack, what "a good concept" actually means, and a walkthrough of tomorrow's activity so nothing's a surprise.
What BSBCRT512 actually asks of you. Performance criteria translated. Why this unit sits where it does in the qualification.
Viable, original, presentable, refinable. Walk through worked examples — concepts that pass each filter, and ones that flunk it.
The four-part case-study activity, end to end. Every question, what it's looking for, and where past students get stuck.
Plain English version. The unit asks you to take a real issue, generate ideas to address it, evaluate those ideas honestly, present one to stakeholders, and refine it based on feedback. Four moves, in order.
Workplace, community, or business. Specific enough to research, big enough to matter. No "make an app" energy.
Multiple ideas, brainstormed wide. Cost, capability, timeline, fit. Cut what doesn't survive scrutiny.
One concept, in a format that fits the audience. Slides, doc, prototype — whatever lands the idea cleanly.
Document what changed. Answer questions with substance. Revise until it's actually implementable.
Use a worked example: walk through a past student concept (anonymised) start-to-finish so they see what each step looks like in practice. The "evaluate honestly" step is where students usually skip — call it out.
Watch for: students fixating on a "cool idea" before they've nailed the issue. Push them back to step 1 every time.
Four parts, 25 questions plus a 5-minute pitch, all completed live in class. You'll get a case study from your trainer, work through it solo, present, and refine. Tick each item off below as we walk through what it's actually asking.
You'll be given a short business case — the kind of issue an organisation might actually face. From there, the activity is yours: identify the issue, develop two solution paths, pick one, present it, and refine it based on feedback.
Bring a laptop and an open mind. No pre-reading required.
Open expand-all. Step through Part 1 first — emphasise that questions 1–8 are about solution one, then questions 9–11 are the evaluation. Same shape repeats for solution two (12–21).
Part 2 is the pitch. 5 minutes, last 2 minutes are Q&A. Remind them this is a soft skills assessment as much as a content one.
Parts 3 & 4 are short but high-leverage. Feedback documentation + reflection. Easy marks if they actually take notes during the pitch.
Every concept that survives this unit passes through these four filters. If it fails one, you fix it or you bin it. Use this as your gut-check tomorrow when you're choosing what to develop.
PC 1.4 — assess factors affecting viabilityPC 2.3 — compare with best practicePC 2.4 — select & present a solutionPC 3.1–3.4 — seek feedback & refineTomorrow is hands-on assessment work. Trainer presents the case study, you scope the issue, develop two solutions, pick one, pitch it, and refine on feedback. Same loop you saw today — now you're driving.
Plus any rough notes from today — half-formed ideas welcome. The case study is presented in class, so don't worry about pre-reading.
Morning: scope the issue and develop both solution paths. Afternoon: pick one, present for 5 minutes, take feedback, refine.
Documented, presented, feedback-incorporated. That's a chunk of your portfolio evidence for BSBCRT512 done in a day.
Confirm: everyone has portfolio template access on the hub. Anyone missing it, sort it tonight not tomorrow morning.
Soft signal: ask for raised hands on confidence (1–5). Anyone at 1–2, grab them at the door for a 2-min check-in.
Pitch listeners: Tim takes odd-numbered students, Duke takes even. Adjust on the day if anyone needs more support.
If anything from today is fuzzy, ping us tonight. Better a 30-second message now than 30 minutes lost tomorrow morning.
